Photos of Ghosts: The First English Album by Premiata Forneria Marconi
Premiata Forneria Marconi, or PFM for short, is an Italian progressive rock band that achieved international fame in the 1970s. Their third studio album, Photos of Ghosts, was their first record in English and the first album by an Italian rock group to appear on the American charts. It was released in October 1973 and peaked at No. 180 on the Billboard 200 albums chart in November 1973.
The album was produced by Peter Sinfield, a former lyricist for King Crimson, who also wrote new lyrics for five of the seven songs on the album. The lyrics were not translations of the original Italian ones, but rather new interpretations that fit the music and the mood of the songs. Sinfield also remixed and edited some of the tracks at Command Studios in London.
The album features the entirety of PFM's second album Per un amico (1972), which is considered a masterpiece of Italian progressive rock. Four of those five recordings have new English lyrics. The best known song from this album, \"Celebration\", had significant airplay on FM Album-oriented rock stations across the U.S. and Canada. It was originally recorded in 1971 as \"Ã festa\" for PFM's first album, Storia di un minuto.
The album also includes a new instrumental titled \"Old Rain\", which showcases PFM's melodic and instrumental richness. The band's style is influenced by early King Crimson and Genesis, but also has a unique Italian flair and a lyrical, romantic and delicate touch.
Photos of Ghosts is a classic of progressive rock and a milestone in PFM's career. It introduced the band to a wider audience and established them as one of the leading acts of the genre. The album is still highly regarded by fans and critics alike, and has been reissued several times on CD and vinyl.

PFM's success with Photos of Ghosts led them to record another English album in 1974, titled The World Became the World. This album was a reworking of their fourth Italian album, L'isola di niente, with new lyrics by Sinfield and some musical changes. The album was less successful than Photos of Ghosts, but still received positive reviews and featured some of PFM's most memorable songs, such as \"The World Became the World\" and \"Four Holes in the Ground\".
In 1975, PFM released their fifth Italian album, Chocolate Kings, which was also their first album with a new bassist, Patrick Djivas. This album marked a change in PFM's sound, as they incorporated more elements of hard rock and pop music. The album was also recorded in English and released in the U.S. and the U.K., where it reached No. 51 and No. 19 on the charts respectively. The album's title track was a hit single in Europe and featured guest vocals by Bernardo Lanzetti.
PFM continued to record and tour throughout the late 1970s and the 1980s, experimenting with different styles and genres, such as jazz fusion, symphonic rock and new wave. They also collaborated with other artists, such as Fabrizio De AndrÃ, Lucio Dalla and Ennio Morricone. PFM is still active today, with a lineup that includes three original members: Mussida, Premoli and Di Cioccio. They have released more than 20 studio albums and several live albums and compilations. They are widely regarded as one of the most influential and respected Italian rock bands of all time. aa16f39245
